Description

Brucea javanica (L.) Merr. is a shrub or small tree that reaches a height of up to 10 m. The branches and leaves have soft hairs. The leaves are compound, imparipinate, arranged opposite and spiral, the leaf blades are ovate to oblong or ovate to lanceolate, the leaf margins are serrate or crenate, the leaf tips are attenuate, the leaf bases are rounded, and the secondary veins of the leaves are unbranched. There are no stipules, the petioles are short. The flower clusters are axillary, pubescent, consisting of small cymes and racemes. The flowers are unisexual, small, greenish white to greenish red or purple. The fruit is a drupe, the dry fruit is black-purple. The seeds are ovoid.
