Description

Ginger is a herbaceous plant, which can reach a height of up to 1.5 m. It has a number of lateral shoots formed in a cluster. The flowers are yellowish green and stems are shorter than leaf petioles. The rhizome of ginger occurs horizontally and is laterally flattened (Medicinal Herbs & Plant Database 2010–2015).

Usage

Ginger root is commonly used throughout the world as a flavour in foods. Apart from being an ingredient and spice in food preparation, ginger also has nutrients good for healthcare such as reducing dandruff problems (Kamaludin et al. 2013). Ginger has been used for the treatment of asthma, diabetes, nausea and pain (Ali et al. 2008).
